According to SRI Education’s 2022 study, “Creativity Challenge: The State of Arts Education in California,” most schools in California have a long way to go to meet the state's mandate of teaching all students dance, music, theater, and visual arts, revealing that only 11% of schools are meeting that requirement, and that "14% of schools with mostly low income students offered all four disciplines, compared to 32% of schools with majority affluent students."

An L.A. County Arts Education Profile, which covered arts education in L.A. schools in 2015-2017, states that, "Equity continues to be a challenge in arts education. Schools with a larger share of English learners, more students eligible for free and reduced price meals (a proxy for low income) and more students of color tend to provide less arts instruction which is of lower quality. The evidence for this is stronger in elementary grades than secondary."
To help shine a spotlight on this issue, the Los Angeles Unified School District recently hosted Art Appreciation and Celebration Week, held between April 22 through April 27, 2024. “Arts education is crucial now more than ever as we know that it not only allows for student creativity but can also assist in social-emotional learning,” said Board Vice President Scott M. Schmerelson. “The arts are deeply embedded into the history of Los Angeles, and our students are the future of this important industry. However, we must go further by openly celebrating and supporting them as they follow their goals in film, art, dance, or any other artistic medium.”
Still, despite L.A.'s reputation as a global cultural hub, the city still struggles to ensure that young, curious minds, particularly those in low-income areas, have access to rich and fulfilling creative experiences.

What is Creative Bend?
Creative Bend focuses on a variety of visual and performing arts, including storytelling, set building, immersive theatre, sound and light design, and costuming.
